Neko Atsume 2: the one most cat lovers should start with #
Hit-Point, the studio behind the 2014 original, released Neko Atsume 2 in October 2024. The idea hasn’t changed. You put food and toys out in a small yard, close the app, and come back later to see which cats turned up, what they played with, and what gifts they left. You take photos for an album and slowly fill a catalog of cats with names and personalities.
The sequel adds visits to other players’ yards (and invitations to yours), a stamp card you fill by visiting, more yard customization, and a dog who wanders through some yards. An optional subscription called Cat’s Club Support adds helper cats, but you don’t need it to enjoy the game.
Wrong for: anyone who wants to actively play. Neko Atsume is mostly about waiting and noticing, which is exactly why fans love it.
The original Neko Atsume #
The first game, listed as Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector, is still available, and Hit-Point said it would keep supporting it after the sequel launched. It’s simpler, which some players prefer.
KleptoCats: cats with sticky paws #
In KleptoCats your cats wander off into other rooms and come back with things they’ve stolen, from socks to far stranger items. It’s silly and low effort, with a kawaii art style. The original was still being updated in late 2025. The sequel, KleptoCats 2, was reportedly pulled from the app stores in 2025. Cats & Soup: a forest kitchen run by cats #
In Hidea’s Cats & Soup (2021), cats cook soup and other dishes in a forest kitchen while you add new stations, decorate, and collect more cats. It’s gorgeous, gentle, and happy to run while you do something else. Seasonal updates add themed maps, costumes and limited-time cats. There’s also a spin-off, Cats & Soup: Magic Recipe, built around merging ingredients and decorating a shared cat house.

Cat Snack Bar: a tiny cat restaurant empire #
Cat Snack Bar starts you with a small snack stand staffed by cats and lets you grow it into a full restaurant. The cats keep cooking while you’re away, you collect different breeds, and you dress them in outfits. It’s free with ads and in-app purchases.
Wrong for: anyone tired of idle tycoon loops. Once you’ve seen one “tap to upgrade the grill” game, you’ve seen most of them.

Cat Quest II and III: an adventure you can finish #
If you want a cat game with a plot, quests and boss fights, the Cat Quest series from The Gentlebros is the answer. The first Cat Quest came out on iOS and Android in 2017. Cat Quest II pairs a cat hero with a dog hero in a war between two kingdoms, and Cat Quest III: Pirates of the Purribean moves the action onto the high seas with ship battles. Cat Quest III reached iPhone in August 2025 and Android in February 2026. On mobile, Cat Quest II costs $4.99 and Cat Quest III costs $9.99, and the third game is free to try before a one-time purchase opens the rest.
The stories are short, funny and packed with cat puns, and each game has a clear ending. That’s rare on mobile.

Flappy Kittens: tap to flap, collect the cats #
Flappy Kittens (called Flappy Cat on Google Play) is the arcade pick. You tap to flap a cat through gaps between pipes, scoop up fish treats along the way, and chain treats and near misses into combos up to ×8. The fish buy new cats and new worlds. It’s the closest thing on this list to a game you can play in the time it takes the kettle to boil.
The cats have real names and personalities. You start with Tangerine, an orange tabby, and can add Mr. Mittens the tuxedo, Patches the calico, Coco the Siamese, Oreo the panda-cat, Mochi in lavender and more, 14 in all. The three rarest can’t be bought: Sir Goldfur for a score of 50, Nebula for a score of 100, and the rainbow cat Prism for an ×8 combo. The 8 worlds each have their own weather, from cherry blossom petals to northern-lights snow and coral-reef bubbles. It plays offline, is rated for all ages, and is free with ads.

A lot of cat games are free, and “free” can mean very different things. Before you settle in, look for:
- How the game makes money. Ads, in-app purchases, a subscription, or a one-time price. The store listing says which.
- Timers and events. Energy bars and limited-time cats decide when you can play. Neko Atsume’s waiting is gentle, but some idle games push countdowns hard.
- Offline play. If you’ll play on flights or the subway, test the game in airplane mode first. Flappy Kittens runs fully offline.
