PUBG Mobile: the realistic one #
PUBG Mobile launched worldwide in March 2018, built by Tencent’s LightSpeed Studios with PUBG Corporation. It’s the closest thing to the PC original: 100 players parachute onto a large map, scavenge for weapons and armor, and fight inside a shrinking safe zone. A full classic round averages around 30 minutes. By early 2026 it had passed 1 billion downloads on Google Play.
Players in India get a separate version, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), published by Krafton. It arrived in 2021 after PUBG Mobile was banned there in 2020.
Wrong for: short breaks. Half an hour is a real commitment on a phone, and the game is a large download.
Free Fire: shorter rounds, lighter on your phone #
Garena’s Free Fire, released in December 2017, puts around 50 players on a smaller map, so matches finish faster than PUBG Mobile’s. It was designed to run on low-cost phones, which is a big reason it became so popular in Southeast Asia, India and Latin America. Free Fire MAX, launched in September 2021, is the same game with better graphics for stronger phones, and it shares accounts with the original.
In India, the original Free Fire was banned in February 2022 along with dozens of other apps, while Free Fire MAX stayed available.
Wrong for: players who want realism. Free Fire leans on character abilities and cartoonish flair.
Fortnite: building, crossplay and a long road back to iPhone #
Fortnite’s battle royale drops 100 players onto an island, and its signature twist is building walls and ramps mid-fight. If building on a touchscreen sounds miserable, Zero Build modes remove it. Your account and cosmetics carry across consoles, PC and mobile, so you can squad up with friends on other devices.
Getting it on a phone depends on where you live. Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store in August 2020 during Epic’s legal fight with Apple, and it returned to the US App Store on May 20, 2025. In the EU, iPhone players get it through the Epic Games Store. On Android it isn’t on Google Play: you install it from the Epic Games Store app, or from the Galaxy Store on Samsung phones.

Call of Duty: Mobile: battle royale plus quick matches #
TiMi Studio Group’s Call of Duty: Mobile launched in October 2019 and is still going strong, with more than 1 billion downloads and over $3 billion in revenue by late 2024. Its battle royale mode takes up to 100 players, solo or in squads. The big draw is everything around it: classic 5v5 multiplayer matches on famous Call of Duty maps take a few minutes, so you can fit in a round even when a full battle royale won’t fit.
Wrong for: players who hate grinding. Earning new weapons and attachments takes a lot of play.
Stumble Guys: a battle royale with no guns #
Stumble Guys drops up to 32 players into obstacle-course races and knockout rounds until one is left standing. Rounds are short, it’s silly rather than violent, and players on iPhone, Android and PC can play together. Both had famous names and big budgets, and both struggled against games that already had huge, loyal player bases. - Customize the controls. PUBG Mobile, Free Fire and Call of Duty: Mobile all let you move and resize every button. Put fire buttons where your thumbs already rest.
- Try gyroscope aiming. Tilting the phone to fine-tune your aim is more precise than dragging a thumb, once you get used to it.
- Use a controller if you have one. Fortnite and Call of Duty: Mobile support Bluetooth controllers. Check each game’s settings, since support varies.
- Play on Wi-Fi and keep the phone cool. Lag and heat are the two biggest killers. Remove the case during long sessions if your phone gets hot.
- Lower the graphics settings. A steady frame rate matters more than shadows.
